Hutchinson, KS - Business People

Six faculty members have been granted tenure by Hutchinson Community College, effective with the fall 2010 semester. The six are: English Instructor Ryan Diehl, Reading Specialist Teri Eckhoff, Business Instructor Kimberly Johnson, EMS Continuing Education Coordinator James LeBaron, Mathematics Instructor Allen Pinkall and Business and Industry Health Care Instructor Dee Wiens.
Credit union leaders from across Kansas gathered in Wichita April 28 to commemorate the Kansas Credit Union Association's 75th Anniversary Annual Meeting and Convention.

In addition to serving people statewide, Kansas credit unions and their trade association have made a positive mark on the national credit union scene over the years. Working together, they created the nation's first independent state regulatory agency for credit unions and first share draft processing service.

KCUA also conducted its annual elections. Newly elected to the Board was Rosa Saenz, Vice-President, Lending Services of Golden Plains Credit Union. She joins Garth Strand, President/CEO of Hutchinson Credit Union, who was re-elected to the board. Other board members from the area continuing their terms include: Don Napell, President/CEO of Farmer's Credit Union; and Jessica Stormann, Vice President of Business Development of Envista Credit Union (formerly Super Chief Credit Union).

The celebration culminated with an Awards Banquet, which honored three of Kansas' most respected credit union leaders: Greg Winkler, President/CEO of Educational Credit Union in Topeka: Henry Peterson Professional of the Year Award; Ed Hanna, Supervisory Committee Chairman of Catholic Family Federal Credit Union in Wichita, received the John Michener Volunteer of the Year Award; Margaret Banker, former President/CEO of Hutchinson Credit Union (previously Hutchinson Teachers Credit Union) and first woman chairman of the KCUA, was posthumously named to the KCUA Hall of Fame. Accepting the award in her honor was her husband Chuck Schirmer.

Gaylon Miller of Hutchinson has earned the AFLIC award from American Family Insurance. He joins a select group of agents who distinguished themselves in 2009 through outstanding sales of life insurance products offered by the company's subsidiary, American Family Life Insurance Company.

Miller has been an agent for American Family since July 1977. His office is at 1210 N. Main.

Glenn Carlton of Hutchinson has been named Monthly Outstanding Salesman by American Family Insurance. He received the honor for outstanding sales of American Family insurance products during the month of April.

Carlton, an American Family agent since February 1975, has an office 610 N. Main.

The Kansas Board of Accountancy announced 60 candidates successfully passed the computerized examination in the January/February 2010 exam window. Passage of the national examination is the first stop to becoming a certified public accountant. Area candidates who passed the examination included William Bush, Halstead, and Sally Yates, Liberal.

Hospice and HomeCare of Reno County announced the retirement of Karen Schwartzkopf, Registered Physical Therapist. Schwartzkopf began her career in 1989 at Hutchinson Hospital. She began providing therapy services in the home setting in 1996 for Hospice and HomeCare of Reno County. During her career, she delivered excellent care to her patients, was a trusted clinician to her peers and developed strong friendships.

Her high standards of expertise will continue to be the standard that fellow therapist strive to meet as they deliver therapy in the home setting.

John E. Walker, Chief Executive Officer of Western Plains Medical Complex in Dodge City, has accepted the position of CEO at Logan Regional Medical Center in Logan, W.Va.

Logan Regional Medical Center is a part of LifePoint Hospitals, as is Western Plains Medical Complex. Walker will be transitioning to his new position during the month of May. It is expected that an interim CEO will be named for Western Plains within the next few weeks, said the Rev. Dennis Zimmerman, chairman of Western Plains board of trustees.

In celebration of 30 years in business, Virginia Kaufman, owner of the Rural Rooster Specialty Gifts shop welcomed Scott Fenton of the Fenton Art Glass Co. to her shop on May 1. Fenton traveled from West Virginia to sign glass pieces purchased at the shop and visit with customers. Kaufman will be having special events and sales throughout the year commemorating her 30 years in business.

Ken DeLuca, Hutchinson, was recently appointed to the Kansas Children's Service League's (KCSL) Board of Directors at its 117th Annual Meeting held at the Topeka Country Club in Topeka. De-Luca is the Vice President of Merchandising at Dillons Stores. In addition to the KCSL Board, DeLuca is active with the agency's Hutch- inson Community Council.

Wesley Towers Retirement Community announced its 2009 Years of Service Award recognitions. They include: 30 years: Rosemary Lee, Lisa Radi and Tammi Burrton; 25 years: Judi Foster; 20 years: Mary Shinn and Debbie Jobe; 15 years: Pat Keck; 10 years: April Lemen, Rose Stanfield, JeniceStory, Nicole Coffee, Linda Crane and Phyllis Mikesell; and five years: Lisa Wells, Robert Delgado, Debbie Frederick, Tiffany Weis, Megan Trindal, Erryn Crow and Art Miller.

Two area residents were among 13 people appointed by Governor Mark Parkinson to the newly created Kansas Advisory Committee for the Blind and Visually Impaired.

Appointed to the committee were Christine Owens, of Hutchinson, and Mignon Luckey of Dodge City.

The committee, formed by executive order following a recommendation from the Facilities Closure and Realignment Commission, will provide advice and counsel to the Secretary of Social and Rehabilitation Services on issues that improve opportunities for employment and independent living of Kansans who are blind or visually impaired.

It will also advise the agency in matters affecting policies, programs, priorities and a long-term, strategic direction for the state's services to the blind or visually impaired.

Owens will serve as a representative of the Statewide Independent Living Council of Kansas. She is the current chair of the Statewide Independent Living Council of Kansas and continues to serve on other state councils geared towards rehabilitation and independent living. She has been the executive director of the Prairie Independent Living Resource Center for more than 10 years.

Luckey is one of three non-profit organization representatives on the board. She has held numerous positions over the past 10 years at the Center for Independent Living Southwest Kansas, including independent living specialist and targeted case manager.

Previously, she was the social service director at the Dodge City Good Samaritan Center.

Ellinwood-area native Mike Ringwald has joined the 10-member board of directors of American State Bank and Trust Company. American State has branches in Great Bend, Larned, Macksville, St. John and Garden City. Ringwald is a lifetime resident of Barton County and is involved in farming, livestock and small business operations. He is 1970 graduate of Bushton High School, is an active member of St. John Lutheran Church in Ellinwood, and currently serves on various Coop and Township Boards.
